Will the Super Bowl coin toss be heads or tails? Will Peyton Manning throw for more yards than little brother Eli?

These are ‘prop’ bets and they have grown in volume, creativity and popularity in recent years. In short: it’s a wager unrelated to the final score of the game. Prop bets can be made on many aspects of the game - for instance, which team will score the most touchdowns or which QB will throw the first interception.

There were hundreds of prop bets on the last Super Bowl, from player and team performances to some completely off the wall prop bets – including one by BetUS.com on the odds of Britney Spears streaking at halftime.

Prop bets have been around since the mid-1980s when Caesar’s Palace offered odds on whether William ‘The Refrigerator’ Perry would score a TD in Super Bowl XX. Perry ended up scoring a touchdown, and bettors won huge.

As bettors were given more wagering options proposition bets became more popular. Props gave bettors new and exciting ways to win money. It isn’t always about the cash; many prop bets are just odd and great conversation starters - how often can you say you’ve got $50 on the length of the Super Bowl National Anthem?

Betting on Props – Can you win?
There are so many tips for choosing the right side of a prop bet, but the most important rule is the same as for a regular sports bet – do your homework.

• Do the math. To be a successful bettor, you should know about probabilities. This is especially true when betting a prop. Look at the numbers and how likely it will be that the number will be reached. You have to look at matchups, how hot the team or player is, and even weather conditions. If they are player vs. player prop bets, compare their numbers, and look at how they have been playing recently.

• Don’t just average the season stats. There are many props that place big emphasis on season-long averages. Team offenses and player roles change during the season and you can take advantage of prop bets if you make a note of these changes before the sportsbook does. You should put more emphasis on current streaks and game logs.

• Keep up with current information. One of the things you have to be aware of is injuries. Many bettors will know injuries to star players, especially on offense, but you can get an advantage by keeping up on all injuries that can affect the game plan. For example, if the starting cornerbacks for a team are not 100 percent healthy, it could be more attractive to make a prop bet on the opposing QB to win his head-to-head prop bet or to go over his total yardage prediction.

• Know the game’s flow and the matchup. Many bettors know that when a football team has a big lead, they will run the ball and grind the clock. Their opponent will be more aggressive in trying to score. You have to consider the game plan of each team to get an advantage when betting on player props that deal with rushing and passing. The more you know about the player matchups, the more of an advantage you can create when making prop bets.

Prop bets can be fun and exciting, but more importantly they can also be profitable if you simply do a little research. Every run, pass, or kick can have an effect on the prop bet you make.

Do your homework, have fun and make some money.
